Teamsters ask Manitoba medical examiner for inquest into fatal train derailment

THOMPSON, Man. – A union is calling for an inquest into the death of a railway employee in a northern Manitoba train derailment.
A Hudson Bay Railway freight train went off the tracks on Sept. 15 near Ponton.
The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference union says it has written to Manitoba’s Chief medical examiner asking for the inquest into the man’s death.
Union vice-president Roland Hackl says an inquest would determine why paramedics weren’t allowed near the derailment site for more than nine hours.
The Transportation Safety Board is investigating what caused three locomotives and four rail cars, some carrying liquefied petroleum, to leave the tracks.
The Arctic Gateway Group, a public-private consortium, bought the Hudson Bay Railway last month.
